Mission Statement

Tulsa Area Triathletes (TAT) is a non-profit Oklahoma corporation with a mission of promoting and providing fair and safe competitive multi-sport events and training opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities in the South Midwest Region of USA Triathlon, the national governing body. The board of directors is charged with the responsibility of providing an environment that promotes social interaction between multi-sport athletes and cooperation between other sister clubs of “single” sport clubs in the area (i.e. swim, bike and running clubs).

History

TAT was organized in 1996 as way of bringing together multisports athletes in the Tulsa area. At the time, the only other options were to join the Tulsa Wheelman Multisport committee, or the Tulsa Running Club. With an initial cash sponsorship from the Doenges Brothers, Larry Krutka initiated the move toward forming a separate multisport organization and the Tulsa Area Triathletes club was born. The goal of the club was to provide a stable foundation for the multisport community, to help organize quality multisport events, and to offer a network for multisport athletes to ‘play’ together. (Keep in mind that at the time, the internet was not available as a viable resource.) Susie Evans designed the original club logo, which incorporated a rendition of the Tulsa skyline.

Verbal agreements were established among the local bike shops and a few athletic apparel stores for TAT members to receive a 10% discount for their purchases. Most of those agreements are still honored today. David Sexton was instated as the first club president (subsequent presidents were Janice Nicklas, Paul Wood, Jim Beach, Lisa Wei-Haas, Raton Parmain, Maureen Callahan, Clay Rahn and Trist Bycroft. Over the years, TAT membership has expanded and contracted, at one time reaching an all-time high of over 160 members. The club initially mailed monthly newsletters to its members until approached in 1999 by Jane Hawkins of the Oklahoma Runner magazine. At the time, she hoped to incorporate more multisports news into the publication and offered several pages in each issue for TAT to publish our club news, in addition to changing the name of the magazine to ‘Oklahoma Runner and Triathlete’.

TAT assumed leadership of or affiliation with the St. John’s Indoor Triathlon, the President’s Cup Triathlon (in Bixby; later rejuvenated and renamed the ‘Spring Fever Triathlon’ by Paul Wood and ultimately moved to Claremore), the Doenges Brothers Tulsa Triathlon (currently the ‘Tulsa Triathlon’, staged at Skiatook Lake), and the Tulsa Duathlon (now the Chris Brown Tulsa Duathlon, in honor of long-time race director, Chris Brown). Later, the club provided support (advisory and volunteers) for the St. John’s Splash ‘n Dash and the Tulsa Parks Department Kids’ Triathlon. For few years, the club also sponsored the McMurtry Offroad Duathlon, although that event is no longer in existence. In 2000, TAT began offering a free ‘Triathlon101 clinic’ to introduce interested newcomers to the ins and outs of multisports.
